Related Works
The construction of the A58-TEEM is not limited to the 32 kilometres of motorway from Melegnano (A1) to Agrate Brianza (A4), but also entailed the completely new construction of 38 kilometres of ordinary roads (provincial and municipal) that were long overdue in the area. Another 15 kilometres of existing roads were upgraded and more than 30 kilometres of cycle paths were made reality. Almost 300 million euros were reserved for so-called “related works”.
These sums did not come from the State or Local Authorities despite the fact that the lack of modernisation of the road network in Greater Milan has a serious impact on the competitiveness of businesses.
The A58-TEEM should, therefore, also be seen in the context of an effective rationalisation of ordinary traffic and an increase in environmental quality in the south-east of the Metropolitan Area. The integrated road infrastructure serves the territory and commuters free of charge, who, for at least forty years, have been calling for it to be built, let alone the A58-TEEM.
These works, wrongly considered minor, involved a relative direct use of public money since, like the A58-TEEM, they were mainly financed by private parties who, through their investments, contributed to the upgrading of the ordinary road network in the Milan, Lodi and Brianza areas. After all, the A58-TEEM and related works were designed not for the purpose of extending the boundaries of the regional capital with the consequent encroachment of many Municipalities, but for the purpose of decongesting traffic that should not be found in any built-up areas.
The main related works completed
ALTERNATIVE ROUTE SP 13 «MONZA-MELZO» - PESSANO CON BORNAGO BYPASS
The project is located in the Municipalities of Caponago (Province of Monza and Brianza) and Pessano con Bornago (Metropolitan City of Milan). The work extends for approximately 2.7 kilometres and is divided into two sections, interrupted by a roundabout. The route of the SP 13 “Monza-Melzo” runs entirely through the built-up area of Pessano con Bornago, from north to south: an alternative route of the SP 13 “Monza-Melzo”, outside the built-up area of Pessano, has therefore been built, which connects with a two-level intersection at the Pessano con Bornago junction and from there to the A58-TEEM. Four roundabouts are also part of the project in question.
Three of them are located along the route of the main branch, at the Pessano con Bornago junction, the SP 216 “Masate-Gessate-Pessano” and the SP 13 “Monza-Melzo” at the southern limit. A fourth roundabout was built at the intersection of the SP 13 “Monza-Melzo” with the new branch connecting the Pessano junction and the SP 215 “Caponago-Pessano”.
A flyover of the latter roadway was created in order to make its route compatible with the main project axis. Lastly, above the alternative route to the SP 13 “Monza-Melzo”, a cycle and pedestrian footbridge was also built to provide a link between the municipalities of Caponago to the north and Pessano con Bornago to the south.
COMPLETION OF ALTERNATIVE ROUTE SP 176 “GESSATE-CAMBIAGO” IN CAMBIAGO
The project involves the Municipality of Cambiago (Province of Milan) and saw the construction of a bypass to the town of Cambiago on the existing SP 176 “Gessate-Cambiago” for a total length of 800 metres.
The new road interconnects with the existing route of the SP 176 “Gessate-Cambiago” via two existing roundabouts. As part of the project, a cycle and pedestrian path was created connecting the northern roundabout to Via Orombella, and the at-grade intersection created with Via Orombella itself was also improved.
VILLA FORNACI ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO THE FORMER SS 11 “PADANA SUPERIORE” SP PROVINCIAL ROAD
The project develops on the edge of the town of Villa Fornaci in the Municipality of Gessate (Metropolitan City of Milan) and extends for 1.2 kilometres.
The project created a new bypass to the built-up area of Villa Fornaci as an alternative route to the existing SP, formerly SS 11 “Padana Superiore”. It is interconnected to the existing road network by means of two roundabouts (one for the connection to the alternative route along the Naviglio Martesana, and the other for the junction with the existing “Padana Superiore”).
The works also saw the upgrading of the existing stretch of road at the entrance to the town of Villa Fornaci with the introduction of a new roundabout at the access to the supermarket located in the area in question.
The construction of the Villa Fornaci alternative route also brought with it a change in the height of the road layout of Via Manzoni, as well as the arrangement of the access roads to the car park for Line 2 of the Metro.
COMPLETION OF ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO THE SP 103 “CASSANESE” - POZZUOLO MARTESANA BYPASS
The project is located in the Municipalities of Vignate, Melzo, Cassina de’ Pecchi, Gorgonzola and Pozzuolo Martesana (Metropolitan City of Milan).
The new alternative route is about 2.5 kilometres long and is part of the larger project of functional upgrading of the SP 103 “Cassanese” road. In fact, the final section of the “Cassanese” has been diverted from the original route and relocated to a new external (and therefore bypass) route at Pozzuolo Martesana, which then interconnects with the new A58-TEEM junction.
In this way, the large flows of traffic were shifted away from the built-up area.
On the alternative route to the SP 103 “Cassanese”, on the other hand, two new project interchanges have been built: the first at the SP 13 “Monza-Melzo”, consisting of a two-level roundabout, and the second as a direct connection between the alternative route to the “Cassanese” and the built-up area of Pozzuolo Martesana. Lastly, the project saw a change in the height of the route on Via Parini, between Melzo and Gorgonzola, which now passes over the new “Cassanese”, as well as the rearrangement of the intersection between the “Monza-Melzo” and Via Germania with the insertion of a new roundabout.
ROUNDABOUT ON THE SP 13 “MONZA-MELZO” FOR ACCESS TO THE MELZO INDUSTRIAL AREA
The project involved the adaptation of the intersection between the SP 13 “Monza-Melzo” and Via Dossetti, which is the access to the industrial area to the south of the municipality of Melzo.
The aim of the work was to increase traffic safety and flow, also in consideration of the increased traffic on the “Monza-Melzo” both northbound, through the upgrading of the SP 103 “Cassanese” and the Pozzuolo Martesana interconnection, and southbound, through the Liscate interchange, both headed towards the A58-TEEM.
UPGRADING OF THE SP 181 ROAD FROM COMAZZO TO MERLINO WITH A BRANCH TO THE MUNICIPALITY OF LAVAGNA
The project consists of a series of works distributed along the SP 181 between the towns of Merlino, Vaiano, Lavagna, Truccazzano and Comazzo (Province of Lodi and Metropolitan City of Milan).
Some curves of the existing road layout were adjusted, widening sections to facilitate the safe crossing of vehicles, and, where this was not possible, creating four new interchanges to facilitate the crossing of the two vehicle flows. In addition, as part of this project, four new cycle and pedestrian paths were built.
ROAD LINK BETWEEN SP 39 “CERCA” AND SP EX SS 415 “PAULLESE” A
The project involved the construction of a new 1.2-kilometre-long road link to create a new route for medium- to long-distance travellers.
The work makes it possible to bypass the town of Caleppio di Settala, reduce the traffic load through the town centre and speed up journeys.
ALTERNATIVE ROUTE SP 16 “SAN GRATO-ZELO BUON PERSICO” – ZELO BUON PERSICO BYPASS
The road works saw the construction of a new route as an alternative to SP 16, built to the west of the built-up area of Zelo Buon Persico and grafted onto the existing road network through new roundabouts.
The interventions are aimed at decreasing the vehicle flow congesting the urban section of the SP 16 and separating local from transit traffic.
The main interventions included: a new roundabout at the existing roundabout located between Via Dante and Viale Europa; modification of the route and height of the SP 16 in order to divert the considerable flow of traffic coming from the “Paullese” and crossing the built-up area of Zelo Buon Persico; a new roundabout on the SP 16 near the intersection with Via per Casolate.
ADJUSTMENT TO SP 16 “SAN GRATO-ZELO BUON PERSICO” IN MUZZANO (LO)
The SP 16-dir is an old road that, branching off from the SP 16 near Galgagnano, creates a direct connection with the Municipality of Paullo and, therefore, with the “Paullese”.
The route unfolds within the agricultural area to the east of the Muzza Canal and involves a number of rural villages such as Molinazzo, Muzzano and Cossago. The route, affected by modest traffic volumes, is an inter-farm road. The section has a width of about six metres and the layout is characterised by sharp turns.
In order to improve the bicycle and pedestrian connections between the towns of Paullo and Zelo Buon Persico, also following the arrival of TEEM, the project envisages the insertion of a bicycle and pedestrian route along the axis of the SP 16-dir between the locality of Muzzano and the town of Paullo.
The project also includes the adoption of measures aimed at improving traffic conditions along the SP 16-dir by modifying and widening the narrowest bends and inserting passing places. In the section through the town of Muzzano, the current road layout is to be moved further west to allow for the construction of a bicycle and pedestrian path along the Roggia Bertonica.
REDEVELOPMENT OF SP 159 “SORDIO-BETTOLA” IN THE MUNICIPALITIES OF CASALMAIOCCO (LO) AND VIZZOLO PREDABISSI (MI)
The project affects the territory north-east of the town of Dresano.
The most characteristic infrastructures of the area, and of greatest interest to the commuter flow from the two town centres, are the SS 9 “Via Emilia”, the SS 415 “Paullese” and the SP 138 “Pandina”.
Therefore, to the east of the built-up area of Dresano, a new road route of approximately 1.5 kilometres has been created as an alternative to SP 159 “Sordio-Bettola” (starting from SP 138 “Pandina” and arriving near the “La Pimpi” farm), with the aim of decreasing the flow of vehicles that in the past congested the urban sections of SP 159 “Sordio-Bettola”, thus separating local traffic from transit traffic.
The new road interconnects with the existing road system by means of new roundabouts, while an overpass allows the work to pass over the link road to Cascina Belpensiero.
CONNECTION BETWEEN SP 17 “SANT’ANGIOLINA”, SP 40 “BINASCHINA” AND SS 9 “VIA EMILIA”
The area within which the works are located is the strip south-west of the built-up area of Melegnano.
Specifically, the project involves the Municipalities of Melegnano, San Giuliano Milanese, Vizzolo Predabissi, Cerro al Lambro (Metropolitan City of Milan) and marginally the Municipality of Sordio (Province of Lodi). The road layouts were particularly necessary considering the highly critical situation previously affecting the secondary extra-urban road network in the so-called “Nodo di Melegnano” (due to the lack of a direct connection, outside the built-up area, between the SP 17 “Sant’Angiolina”, the SP 40 “Binaschina” and the SS 9 “Via Emilia”).
The result would be that east-west interchange traffic would overlap with north-south traffic right in the section inside the towns of Melegnano and Vizzolo Predabissi, with obvious negative effects in terms of traffic circulation, travel safety and noise and air pollution.
Therefore, the main objective of the project was the separation of through traffic from local traffic, defining a new road route that, starting from the existing junction between the “Binaschina” and the A1 motorway (east of Melegnano), would run outside the built-up areas, in parallel with the A1 motorway, until it joined the “Sant’Angiolina” north of Cerro al Lambro and, after passing, in close proximity to the A58-TEEM, the Autostrada del Sole, the Lambro river and the Milano-Bologna railway, would end at the “Via Emilia” immediately north-east of the Sordio industrial area.
The work was also completed with the construction of a new junction to replace the current intersection between “Via Emilia” and SP 204 “San Zenone-Via Emilia” in the Municipality of Vizzolo Predabissi. These works have made it possible to improve accessibility conditions to the new motorway route and, in particular, to the TEEM junction at Vizzolo Predabissi.
ALTERNATIVE ROUTE SS 9 “VIA EMILIA” – TAVAZZANO BYPASS (LO)
The territory of the Municipality of Tavazzano con Villavesco (Province of Lodi) was affected by considerable traffic towards the Milan Metropolitan Area, also due to an almost complete saturation of the connecting routes present in the past.
The project saw the construction of a new road route outside the centres of Tavazzano and Villavesco, originating from the SS 9 “Via Emilia”, passing north of the Municipality, crossing the SP 218 “Casalmaiocco-Villavesco” and SP 158 “Villavesco-Cassino d’Alberi” and then returning to join the “Via Emilia” at kilometre 304.5.
The main objective was to create an artery to separate through traffic from local traffic.
CONNECTION BETWEEN THE SP 415 “PAULLESE” AND THE NEW PAULLO (MI) TOLLBOOTH
The territory of the project comprises the area between the Municipalities of Paullo (Metropolitan City of Milan), Zelo Buon Persico and Merlino (Province of Lodi), east of the A58-TEEM. This is an area characterised by significant commuter flows in the direction of the Lombardy capital, with a situation of widespread saturation of all existing roads.
The construction of the project allowed for the interconnection of TEEM with the “Paullese”, by means of a road section connecting the A58 tollbooth in Paullo with the same provincial road, and the construction of two roundabouts (the first in correspondence with the square in front of the tollbooth and the second in correspondence with Via IV Novembre).
UPGRADING OF SP 17 “SANT’ANGIOLINA” FROM SALERANO SUL LAMBRO (LO) TO SANT’ANGELO LODIGIANO (LO)
The work has a total length of approximately 1.8 kilometres, divided into two sections, and aims to upgrade and make safe the SP 17 “Santangiolina” in the Municipalities of Caselle Lurani, Marudo and Castiraga Vidardo (Province of Lodi).
The main objective of the intervention is to adapt the characteristics of the “Sant’Angiolina” to meet the needs of medium-long distance travel within the existing road network with main destination A58-TEEM, via the nearby Vizzolo Predabissi junction, or towards the A1 motorway, via the Melegnano and Lodi junctions.
ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO THE SP 201 – MARZANO BYPASS (PV)
The infrastructure is located in the area with the interconnection with the upgraded SP 415 “Paullese” road and the Paullo junction, passing the municipal territory of Merlino (Province of Lodi).
The road link, with a total length of approximately 1.4 kilometres, represents a new route to serve medium to long-distance travel and bypasses the town of Marzano.
In this way, traffic on the road network within the village was alleviated and, at the same time, travel in the area became faster. Previously, in fact, traffic was concentrated on the route made up of the historical routes of Provincial Roads (SP), which were unsuitable for the traffic generated by the A58-TEEM and the SP 415 “Paullese” upgrade.
SP 40 “BINASCHINA” - SP 39 “CERCA” CONNECTION
The work has a total length of approximately 1.3 kilometres and allows the creation of a new road to serve medium/long distance travel by bypassing the town of Melegnano (Metropolitan City of Milan), which is congested with traffic, including heavy-duty vehicles.
In the past, this type of travel used the route formed by the historical routes of the two Provincial Roads (SP) 17 “Sant’Angiolina” and 40 “Binaschina”, as well as the State Road (SS) 9 “Via Emilia”, all of which were saturated and unsuitable for the traffic volumes produced by the TEEM motorway route.
The project has resulted in the creation of new roads (connecting to the A58-TEEM junction at Vizzolo Predabissi and the construction of an alternative route to SP 159 “Sordio-Bettola”) and the upgrading of sections of existing routes (SP 159 “Sordio-Bettola”), which are now interconnected with the existing road network by means of roundabouts.
REDEVELOPMENT AND SAFETY OF THE SS 9 “VIA EMILIA” IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF SORDIO (LO)
The work is located in the southern part of the area affected by the A58-TEEM and falls entirely within the administrative area of the Province of Lodi and the Municipality of Sordio.
The project saw the realisation of works (850 metres in total length) aimed at guaranteeing a safe crossing of the town and improving medium/long distance traffic on the local road network, which, since the infrastructure-system came into operation, have the TEEM as their main destination through the adjacent Vizzolo Predabissi junction.
The three main road works include the redevelopment and safety improvements to the route of State Road (SS) 9 “Via Emilia”, the creation of an entrance at the roundabout near Via Papa Giovanni XXIII for traffic coming from the north, and the diversion of Via Don Gnocchi onto the Via Papa Giovanni XXIII roundabout.
ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO SP 138 “PANDINA” IN MADONNINA DI DRESANO (MI)
The new road is about one kilometre long and covers the municipal areas of Casalmaiocco (Province of Lodi) and Vizzolo Predabissi (Metropolitan City of Milan).
The project created an external road to serve medium/long distance travel, bypassing the town of Dresano.
The work interconnects with the existing road network at the intersection of the SP 138 “Pandina” with Viale Lombardia and the five-arm roundabout on the SP 159 “Sordio-Bettola” at the intersection with Via Libertà.
