The TEEM crosses this area for a kilometre or so. The new infrastructure will be contained in a deep cutting. Vehicle transit will take place 8 to 10 m below ground level, making the work invisible from countryside level.
Along its route, TEEM will cross Line Two of Milan’s subway network and the Martesana Canal, both through two tunnel underpasses. The “Verde” underpass will be some 100 m long and built using a “thrust boring” technique. The tunnel will be “thrust” beneath the subway lines, which will be supported by a special steel truss. This is the most effective technique for minimizing inconvenience to public transport users. Line Two will only be suspended for three to four days, most likely during the week of 13 August 2014. A replacement bus service will be laid on.
The Martesana Naviglio underpass will be 440 m long and excavated using an open cast technique. The watercourse will be diverted along a parallel route built ad hoc for the time it takes to build the underpass.
Both of these works will make it possible to minimize TEEM impact in the surrounding area. In fact, the motorway route will have no visual impact on this area of acknowledged environmental and natural value.
Gessate will also host a motorway exit/toll booths interconnecting to the local road network via a slip road to the “Padana Superiore” Strada Provinciale (formerly Statale) 11.
The first work associated with the municipality is the so-called “Gessate alternative route to the ‘Masate-Gessate’ Strada Provinciale 216 road”. This route, following the same alternative route planned by the Province of Milan, to the West links the Pessano con Bornago bypass (another TEEM-related piece of infrastructure) and to the East Via Monza.
A protected cycle path is also planned to facilitate “slow movement” links between Gessate and Pessano con Bornago.
The “Villa Fornaci northern bypass” will also be built at Gessate, along with realization of the “Martesana” Special Environmental Project, which involves shifting the current SP 11 several metres further from the canal to help improve the bank and build a cycle path/walkway benefiting from environmental and natural improvements.
